Arewa: One Region, Many Challenges – The Sarkin Gobir Killing: A Wake-up Call

By Sani Danaudi Mohammed

The Arewa region, once a beacon of hope and unity, is now facing numerous challenges that threaten its very existence. Despite having produced many leaders, including heads of state and prominent politicians, the region remains plagued by poverty, unemployment, kidnapping, banditry, and illiteracy. The Arewa region’s rich cultural heritage and history are being eroded by these challenges, leaving its people in a state of despair.

The recent killing of Sarkin Gobir, a prominent traditional ruler, is a stark reminder of the region’s descent into chaos. The Arewa region’s reputation is fading, and its people are suffering. It is time for the people of Arewa to come together and address the challenges confronting them. We must put aside our differences and work towards a common goal of peace, stability, and prosperity.

We need leaders who prioritize the region’s development, not just their own power and wealth. We need to invest in our youth, provide them with opportunities, and empower them to build a better future. The Arewa region has a vast array of resources, but they are not being utilized effectively. We must tap into these resources and work together to achieve our goals.

The Arewa region has the potential to be a hub of economic prosperity, but we need to tap into our resources and work together to achieve this goal. We must reject ethnic and religious divisions and embrace unity, justice, fairness, and equity. Our diversity should be our strength, not our weakness.

History does not just happen; we make it. Let us stand up and write our own history, one that will make posterity judge us well. The leaders must know that the children they abandon today will chase them tomorrow. We must take responsibility for our actions and work towards a better future.

There is an urgent need for the Northern Governors to come together and reflect on the lessons of Late Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, who united the entire region as an individual. His legacy serves as a reminder that unity and leadership can bring about peace and prosperity. The governors have no reason not to keep the region safe for Northerners, considering the Sardauna’s achievements.

By emulating the Sardauna’s approach, the governors can work towards addressing the region’s challenges, including insecurity, poverty, and unemployment. It is time for them to put aside their differences and prioritize the well-being of the Northern people. By doing so, they can restore the region’s lost glory and create a brighter future for generations to come.

While commending the nation’s Security Agencies for their tireless efforts to combat the menace of insecurity in the North, it is evident that more efforts are required to address the escalating challenges. The recent killing of Sarkin Gobir is a stark reminder that despite the progress made, the region still grapples with formidable security threats.

Therefore, it is imperative for the Security Agencies to intensify their operations, adopt innovative strategies, and collaborate with local stakeholders to effectively curb the activities of bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements. We must also address the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education.

Furthermore, the Federal and State Governments must provide the necessary resources, support, and leadership to enable the Security Agencies to succeed in their mission. This includes investing in intelligence gathering, surveillance, and community policing initiatives that can help prevent attacks and bring perpetrators to justice.

Nigeria, particularly the North, is at a critical juncture, grappling with multidimensional challenges that demand immediate attention and collective action. The region is facing unprecedented levels of insecurity, economic stagnation, and social unrest, which threaten to undermine its very fabric.

Now is the time for collective action, and President Bola Ahmad Tinubu needs our support to tackle these challenges head-on. We must put aside our differences and work together to find solutions to the North’s problems. The President’s commitment to addressing the region’s challenges is evident, and we must rally behind him to ensure the success of his initiatives.

The North has no reason to be unemployed and poor, considering the natural resources the region is blessed with. The vast arable land that has not been effectively put into use ought to have given us peace and stability. One thing is clear: unless other Northern Governors key into commercial agriculture like the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago, we will continue to suffer the pains and negative impact of youth restiveness.

The way forward is clear. We must embrace commercial agriculture, invest in our youth, and provide them with opportunities to build a better future. We must also address the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education. By doing so, we can restore peace, stability, and prosperity to the North. Let us act now.
