ANRIN Provide Nutrition Services To Women, Children In Kano

AREWA AGENDA – The Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) has begun the implementation of the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) project in nine Local Government Areas in Kano State. A project that aims to improve access and uptake of basic nutrition services by pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls, and children under five years of age.

The Project objective is to increase the utilization of quality, cost-effective nutrition services for pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls and children under five years in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo and Plateau States in the next five years.

Dr Ishaya Madaki who is Project Director for the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN)/ Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) made the disclosure at the press briefing held at the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) office in Sokoto Road Nassarawa GRA Kano.

He explained that the ANRiN was designed to achieve a balance between the urgent need to protect Nigerian children from the devastating and life-long effects of stunting through the scale-up of cost-effective interventions and strengthening the stewardship role of the Federal and State governments in Nigeria to plan, finance, implement, monitor and learn from large-scale nutrition programs through Disbursement Linked Indicators (DLIs) to incentivize the delivery of nutrition sensitive ante-natal care for pregnant women through public primary health care centres.

Dr Ishaya Madaki added that the project will provide iron-folic acid tablets and at least three doses of intermittent preventive treatment for malaria during pregnancy amongst other services in addition to 15 sachets of micronutrient powders once every two months to children between 6-23 months to complement their feeding.

Saying the project will cover Nasarawa, Kano Municipal, Fagge, Gwale, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Dala, Bunkure and Wudil Local Government Areas in the state on improving knowledge and nutrition related practices among mothers and caregivers of children below two years of age among others.

He further said as of July 31 2021, Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) has provided 488,948 and 1,231,941nutrition services were given to women and children respectively and commended the government for according priority to the health sector & expressed optimism that Kano will immensely benefit from the provision of a community based basic package of Nutrition Services.
