Kaduna Ex-Gov, Balarabe Musa, is dead

AREWA AGENDA – A former governor of Kaduna State during Nigerian Second Republic, Balarabe Musa, is dead.

Mr Musa’s death was announced by his political associate and former senator, Shehu Sani. “Alhaji Balarabe Musa has died. May Allah forgive his souls and grant him Aljanna firdausi.Amin,” Mr Sani wrote on Twitter.

Balarabe Musa was elected governor of Kaduna State in 1979 but was later controversially impeached and removed from office.

In one of his last interviews in October 2020, Musa said Nigeria could have been better if office holders performed well.

He told News Agency of Nigeria that the country’s aspirations can still be achieved if both the leadership and followers play their part.

“The country has not fared well at 60. It is very disappointing that this is where we are. But things can be better; we can still achieve the dreams of the founding fathers if we all play our role in nation-building.”

Musa urged leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people.

The deceased restated his call for restructuring, noting that it was necessary for progress

“We need to restructure the country politically and economically. We need to ensure that power actually resides with the people. The economic and political models we are currently operating only empower a few.”

Musa was born on August 21, 1936 in Kaya, Kaduna. He studied at Zaria Middle School and at the Institute of Administration, Zaria. He was an accounts clerk and later a school teacher.

The deceased was the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate in the 2003 elections.

In 2007, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) he led endorsed then retired General Muhammadu Buhari against Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In January 2009, at a public lecture in honour of former Oyo State Governor, Lam Adesina, Musa said that electoral rigging must be stopped.

“We need a revolution in Nigeria to have a positive change in the political system”, he said.

In April 2010, Musa stated that the country’s electoral system was rigged to favour moneybags.

On August 31 2010, the politician quit active politics due to health issues and announced his resignation as PRP chairman

He is considered a progessive and worked with M.D. Yusufu and like minds to mobilise against the military junta of late Sani Abacha.
